Dr. John Cooper from the prestigious Columbia University Department

Meet Dr. John Cooper from the prestigious Columbia University Department of Orthopedics in New York City. Dr. Cooper is a specialist in knee & hip arthroplasty and is another elite level orthopedic surgeon who offers his patients the option of receiving a custom knee replacement.

It has been my pleasure to work with Dr. Cooper over the years and get to understand his thought processes on how he approaches each patient. No patient fits a pre determined template with Dr. Cooper because he treats everyone based on their unique needs.

If you live in the New York City area and think you need, or have been told you need, a knee or hip replacement, then it would be recommended that you place a call to Dr. Cooper’s office at 212-305-4565. Surgery is not always the answer, and Dr. Cooper will take a thorough assessment of your needs and not recommend knee or hip replacement surgery unless it is necessary.

Dr. Cooper is one of the hardest working orthopedic surgeons I have ever met. If you entrust him with your care, then he will work hard to exceed your expectations and deliver exceptional care and the fastest possible recovery available anywhere. We are fortunate to have such an extremely talented orthopedic surgeon in our New York City community.

Bone Preservation Using the Conformis Custom Knee Replacement

StiffKnees-650x450.jpg

In 2016 Dr. William Kurtz and engineering genius John Slamin published an article in Reconstructive Review that looked at the amount of bone that is preserved when using the Conformis iTotal Knee Replacement compared to a standard off-the-shelf knee replacement.

What they found was that the off-the-shelf knee replacements resected 12-49% more bone than the custom-made Conformis iTotal.

What does this mean? It is possible that if the primary knee replacement is done with the Conformis iTotal and, if for some reason the patient needs a revision, they can still be revised to a primary knee instead of a more invasive revision knee.

How Can The Conformis Custom Knee Replacement Improve A Surgeon’s Practice?

https://www.vumedi.com/video/surgeons-experience-practice-growth-of-30-to-50-percent/

The above link is to a VuMedi video that features multiple surgeons who have adopted the Conformis Custom Total Knee Replacement and the effect it has had on their practice.

Hear how surgeons are seeing unprecedented growth in their patient volume since they started offering their patients the option of having a custom knee replacement instead of the standard off-the-shelf knee replacement. They also discuss the major improvements they have seen in their patient outcomes.

Dr. Ian McDermott summarizes this practice growth phenomena perfectly when he states that, “patients will demand the best knee, and when they realize that the Conformis knee is so much better than the standard knee, then patients won’t want the standard knee.”

The patients we serve are hearing the stories of how well people who receive a custom knee replacement are doing compared to the status quo and are now asking for Conformis for their surgery. Conformis helps deliver higher patient satisfaction, a faster recovery, less pain, shorter hospital stay, a more natural feeling knee and leads to more referrals.

Prospective patients will continue to educate themselves on their options when they are in need of a total knee replacement. They want custom knee replacements and will eventually figure out that many orthopedists advertise themselves as using custom or customized knee implants but in reality, they are only using off the shelf knee replacements.

Why not give patients what they want?

Do You Choose Tibial Fit, Tibial Rotation or Both

old-man-running.jpg

Who says you can not have your cake and eat it too? Why should a surgeon and their patients have to settle on good enough with regards to selecting proper tibial rotation or tibial fit?

In Dr. Gregory Martin’s attached paper titled, “In-Vivo Tibial Fit Analysis of Customized, Patient-Specific TKA Versus Off-the-Shelf TKA” which was presented at the 2014 Transatlantic ICJR Meeting, he found that we indeed can have our cake and eat it too.

In every knee replacement, a surgeon must choose between maximizing the fit of the tibial implant and sacrificing rotation or accepting poor tibial coverage and achieving proper rotation. Dr. Martin has proven that Conformis has made these compromises obsolete.

A custom knee replacement, which Conformis is the only company in the world to offer, respects the shape of the patient’s native tibia and delivers an implant that maximizes coverage and provides accurate rotation.

Dr. Martin informs us that the advantages of a custom made tibial implant include a lower incidence of knee pain from a tibial component that overhangs, implant loosening due to poor bone support, and ultimately poor patient satisfaction.

It is known that 20% of patients are not satisfied with the outcomes of their knee replacements. Not many industries can survive for long with such high levels of unsatisfactory results. Around 700,000 knee replacement procedures were performed in 2017. This means there are approximately 140,000 patients who are unsatisfied with their results. With such poor subjective outcomes, why not consider a technology that addresses many of the causes of patient dissatisfaction? The answer is not to set low expectations for the patient but rather to meet or exceed a patient’s expectations.

Patient satisfaction in total knee replacement can be improved through the use of custom knee technology.
