In 2016 Dr. William Kurtz and engineering genius John Slamin published an article in Reconstructive Review that looked at the amount of bone that is preserved when using the Conformis iTotal Knee Replacement compared to a standard off-the-shelf knee replacement.
What they found was that the off-the-shelf knee replacements resected 12-49% more bone than the custom-made Conformis iTotal.
What does this mean? It is possible that if the primary knee replacement is done with the Conformis iTotal and, if for some reason the patient needs a revision, they can still be revised to a primary knee instead of a more invasive revision knee.
